Kartchner Caverns

After leaving Scott and Heathers house, my parents and I went down to Sahuarita to visit Kevin and Merica, and visit Kartchner caverns. We have been trying for a few years to find a good time to go visit the caves and it finally worked out. Kevin, Merica, Brittany, Savannah, Eliza and Lincoln came with us also. It was a really great experience and also my first time to be in a cave. We were one of the last tours of the day, and it was also our tour guides last tour for that day, plus it was just our family and two other boys in our group, so she gave us her V.I.P. tour since it was such a small group. It was so interesting learning about how caves are created and everything that goes into them and how it takes 100 of thousands of years for them to grow, and how it is still growing. While walking through it you can still hear the water dripping the same way it has for thousands of years. It was also interesting before we entered she talked to us about how we couldn't touch anything and if we did we had to tell her so that she could mark it and someone would come and clean the spot. If any of the oils from our skin or lint from our clothes get on anything she said in one day it would start growing mold on it. Can you imagine what would happen if everyone got to touch it--yikes! It is tempting in some places because you are right next to these amazing creations :)

There are I think three main rooms in the cave, the throne room, rotunda and the big room. The big room is not open for tours at this time of year because the bats use that room for their babies so no one is allowed in, so we went on the tour that took us through the Throne and Rotunda room. Below is a picture of a map of the cave. The yellow parts are the rooms we saw. The Red part behind Savannah's head is the Big room, hopefully we can go back sometime to see that room.

They have lots of different things to look at and a short video that you can watch that talks about the people who discovered the cave--can you imagine discovering something like that?


Lincoln, Savannah, Brittany, Eliza and I by another cave display, I think the little crawl holes are supposed to resemble what the cavers had to crawl through. If you look in the top left corner of the picture you can see one of the men who discovered it crawling through a hole.

Since you aren't allowed to take anything inside the cave, I got these off of the internet. This is a picture of the Throne room, this was my favorite part, it was so big and just amazing. If you look at the bottom of the picture you can see a man dressed in a red suit, that shows how huge this room is. This picture is taken about by where they have you sit down and then they play music and they have lights that shine on different parts of the room, it gives it a really cool effect and really makes you think about how amazing the creations of the earth are.
